COMMUNITY

The Wanneroo Amateur Football Club (WAFC) takes immense pride in its contributions to both the local community and the wider football fraternity. Beyond the game, we actively engage in initiatives that benefit our community, including supporting local junior teams with sponsorships and coaching resources, and continuing to build upon the relationship with the Wanneroo Junior Football Club, who share the fantastic facilities at the Wanneroo Showgrounds with us. Over the years, our club has contributed representatives to the WAAFL executive, shaping league policies, and produced talented players who have progressed to the Fremantle Dockers, West Perth (Men’s and Women’s Programs), East Perth, State teams, and the All-Australian Amateurs.

Amateur football clubs like WAFC have a proven positive impact on local communities, fostering physical and mental wellbeing, social connections, and economic activity. Research highlights include:

  • Football clubs create strong social networks across all age groups, more so than work, education, or other community groups.
  • Members gain valuable skills such as public speaking, problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution.
  • Clubs significantly enhance job prospects, particularly for individuals aged 15 to 24, through their social networks.
  • Each player extends the club’s reach, impacting 10 community members and fostering civic pride.
  • Clubs support local businesses, including cafes, bakeries, hotels, butchers, and tradespeople, boosting the local economy.

Giving Back to the Community

WAFC strives to contribute beyond football, despite limited resources. Here are some highlights of our community initiatives:

Pink Ladies’ Day: Our annual fundraiser for Breast Care WA.

Mental Health Awareness: Through our annual Blue Jumper game, we raise awareness about male depression and youth suicide, offering resources and raising funds for Beyond Blue.

Family Day: Now in its third year the club hosts an annual family day, when our thirds and fourths take to the showground to strut their stuff. This is a fun packed day with heaps of activities for the youngest roos, from a petting zoo, to face painting, Colouring competitions, to lego building. Footy skills games and a half time feature game from the Wanneroo Junior Football club Auskickers, this day has something for everyone. Bring the kids, let them have some fun, while the parents enjoy the great community footy on display while they partake in the best amateur football hospitality in the state.

Local Junior Development: We host Little League games for Auskickers at half time of our senior men’s games, giving the youngest Roos a great game day experience, and a high 5 from the league side on their way off the ground.
