History of the club

The 2009 season was the Roo's twenty fourth (24) year in the Western Australian Amateur Football League having nominated one side back in 1985.This inaugural side was graded into the "J" division of the competition. Before the start of the "85 season, the club had already expanded to a second side in the "L" division. A great start for the club. 2008 saw the club in the Western Australian Amateur Football League "B" division for the league team, the reserves and the colts and a third team was nominated into a lower division. The Amateur League is the largest and strongest of all the competitions outside the WAFL.

The club has consistently progressed through the grades since inauguration, collecting six (6) Premiership Flags in the process. The club has been in "A" grade for five (5) year, being in the Grand Final in 2004 and reaching the Preliminary Final in 2005. The 2006 season exposed the clubs lack of player depth, resulting in the club being relegated, for the first time to the "B" division of the league. The main contributing factor being that the senior side lost fourteen (14) players from it's successful 2005 Preliminary Final team with many players going to West Perth in the higher WAFL competition. Other players took up employment in the mining industry's fly in / fly out structure and others retired from football altogether. This exposure to the club's lack of player depth has resulted in the club reassessing its strategy and putting in place a medium to long term plan to ensure that the club can harness the strength of the juniors in it's surrounding catchment areas.

Our home ground Wanneroo Showgrounds, has been our base for both on and off field success. The Roo's has, arguably, the largest supporter base in the fifty four (54) club league. A $170,000 lighting upgrade in 2005, saw the club play it's first night game, which was attended by well in excess of fifteen hundred (1500) spectators.

The club has forged a strong link with the community where Saturday games are a major community event, for both young and old.

The club prides itself on what it gives back to not only the community but also to the football fraternity. We sponsor our local junior team as well as being able to resource out to other teams very experienced coaches. We have also had, over the years, representatives on the Amateur League Executive Board which sets the policies and the rules for all the Amateur League divisions. We have produced recruits for the Fremantle Dockers, West Perth and the State Amateur team, in both seniors and colts. In 2005 the club had two (2) players selected for the State Amateur Team and both players were consequently selected into the All Australian Team. These players were Rickie Rogers and Leigh McKnight who was then appointed Vice Captain of the team and went on to represent Australia in the Australian - Irish series that was played in Ireland.

The main focus of the club is it's on-field performance, player welfare and building its standing and support within the community. Our strong and proud history will continue on into the future and we hope that 2009 is a very successful year for the Wanneroo Amateur Football Club.
